Why this decision now?
It was a joint report by the IGAS (General Inspectorate of Social Affairs) and the General Inspectorate of Finance that revived the subject. According to their calculations, the dereimbursement of these drugs alone would save nearly 90 million euros.

Another sector concerned is spa treatments, for which the reimbursement rate for ALD patients would increase from 100% to 65%.

The stated objective? Redirect public spending towards treatments deemed truly effective, and encourage a prescription that is more adapted to medical needs.

“Weak medical service”: what does it mean?
The medical service provided (SMR) is an indicator used by the French National Authority for Health to assess the interest of a medicine. If it is classified as “low”, it means that its effectiveness is not sufficiently demonstrated, or that there are more effective alternatives.

But that doesn’t mean it’s useless in all cases. For many patients, these treatments remain important for their daily quality of life.
